SUMMARY
LANTERN is ESTELLAN’s internal designation for an instrument archive assembled between YC113 and YC116. It contains measurements, equipment configurations, calibration information, data processing, models, and interpretation notes. Since YC128, ESTELLAN has been inventorying and qualifying this material from its headquarters in Caille.
This work determines which parts of the corpus may still support a technically defensible comparison with contemporary measurements. Each file is reviewed with the available information on its production conditions and chain of custody.
As of the publication date of this note, no reproducible deviation has been confirmed, no physical cause has been selected, and no operational recommendation has been made. Public confidence remains LOW.
WHAT LANTERN IS
LANTERN is the documentary designation for a historical body of technical material. Its review precedes any new interpretation and forms part of ESTELLAN’s applied-research function.
The corpus includes:
- raw observations, or records as close as possible to their state at acquisition;
- instrument logs and platform configurations;
- calibration certificates, readings, and parameters;
- software, transformations, and models applied to the data;
- notes that separate observations from interpretations with varying degrees of precision.
These materials do not all have the same status. A measurement with a complete history may become eligible for comparison. An isolated note, a model output without parameters, or a series without metadata may retain documentary value without constituting quantitative evidence.
SCOPE OF THE REVIEW
The first phase identifies each item, its provenance, and its dependencies. ESTELLAN seeks to determine who produced the data, which instrument and platform were used, the operating environment, the applicable calibration, and every subsequent transformation. When information is missing, that absence is recorded rather than replaced by an assumption.
The second phase places series in three categories. Reusable series have enough context to be submitted to a contemporary protocol. Documentary series remain useful for understanding the development of methods but cannot support a measured conclusion by themselves. Undetermined series still require the recovery of a parameter, software dependency, or calibration file.
The third phase will prepare a comparison with contemporary observations if the number and quality of reusable series justify one. The protocol, uncertainty margins, and exclusion criteria will be defined before results are examined in order to reduce selection effects.
QUALIFICATION METHOD
The review applies four principles.
Provenance. A series is studied quantitatively only when its origin and chain of custody can be traced to a sufficient standard.
Instrument state. Configuration, known calibration, incidents, and equipment limitations are reviewed with the measurement. A deviation may arise from the instrument as readily as from the observed environment.
Processing traceability. Filters, conversions, synchronisation, and model parameters are recorded. A transformation capable of amplifying or producing a deviation must be isolated and tested.
Separation of evidence levels. An observation describes what was recorded. An interpretation proposes a reading. A hypothesis organises future work. These levels are not interchangeable and will be published separately when the context requires it.
Negative results belong in the record. The absence of a deviation in an admissible series will not be removed because it fails to extend a historical interpretation. Likewise, apparent repetition across several models will not be treated as physical repetition while a common origin in the data or processing remains possible.
CURRENT CONDITION OF THE CORPUS
The inventory confirms that several generations of material were preserved. Some series contain enough information to continue qualification. Others depend on obsolete components, incomplete parameters, or descriptions of context that are too general. ESTELLAN is therefore not publishing a consolidated volume of admissible measurements: a provisional total would suggest a degree of precision that the archive does not yet support.
Three methodological findings can nevertheless be communicated. First, the historical documents report deviations in several model versions, which justifies reviewing the file without confirming the reality or source of those deviations. Second, the series were acquired under conditions and with configurations that are not always comparable. Third, the available documents do not yet determine whether every series addressed the same technical question.
These findings guide the inventory. They are not a scientific result.
RESEARCH QUESTION
The principal public question is deliberately narrow:
Do deviations observed in the historical datasets persist after controls for calibration, acquisition context, and applied processing?
If the answer is negative, the file can document the limits of historical methods. If a deviation persists, it must be reproduced through an independent protocol before any search for a cause or instrument use. The ability to measure an effect implies neither a particular origin nor operational value.
CONTRIBUTION OF ESTELLAN DEEP
ESTELLAN DEEP brings together the company’s field operations and applied research. For this review, its missions may provide contemporary measurements, document acquisition conditions, and test calibration or preservation procedures. These activities first serve instrument validation.
DEEP’s capsuleer phase begins in YC128 with Utherion Estellan’s certification. It progressively expands access to field conditions and builds a record documented mission by mission. Data will be admitted according to quality and traceability, regardless of the status of the platform that produced it.
HISTORICAL NOTE
The corpus brings together measurements, configurations, processing records, models, and interpretations attributed to Serge Estellan’s work from YC113 onward. Preserved in ESTELLAN’s archive, it has been undergoing controlled inventory since YC128.
The technical file and the file concerning that disappearance remain separate. Serge’s final destination, the precise purpose of his last work, the cause of his disappearance, and any third-party involvement have not been established. ESTELLAN presents no hypothesis connecting those unknowns to the deviations in the archive.
LIMITS AND NEXT COMMUNICATION
The inventory is incomplete. Some acquisition conditions cannot yet be reconstructed, several dependencies still require verification, and no sufficiently documented contemporary measurement set is yet directly comparable. These limits define the scope of the public work.
The next note will be published when a reusable historical subset has been defined and a comparison protocol has been approved. If no subset meets the stated criteria, that conclusion will be published in the same manner.
The public status of LANTERN therefore remains straightforward: qualification in progress, low confidence, no established result.
